THE RHYTHM OF prayer

(Solitude, Specific Prayers, and Saying Thanks)

BRAINSTORM

• Think of days of the week and times of day when you can get away to be alone with God and with your thoughts and talk to Him.

• Set aside a time to talk to God about specific things for an extended time.

• Next time you drive alone in your car, don’t listen to music or podcasts at first, but sit in silence. Then, talk to God about what’s on your mind.

• Spend an extended amount of time remembering what God has done and telling Him you’re thankful. (Try my exercise of writing it out!)

• Once a month, go on an extended walk while you’re praying to God, thanking God, and praying specifically for people in your life.

BRAINSTORM from the community

  • While driving and listening to worship music, I love using the lyrics to prompt prayer for specific people or circumstances. For example, if a lyric line talks about breaking strongholds, I will pray out loud "Jesus, please break the stronghold of (fill in the blank) in (Name's) life." After an entire song, I will have prayed for many of the people in my life or situations on my heart! - Marla C.

  • I manage the ‘Prayer Chain’ texting App for our church so I get requests all day (and night) and my husband and I committ to prayer of action immediately. Maybe a quiet prayer at that moment and a continual prayer throughout the day, in my commute, between seeing my clients, anywhere, everywhere, I try to pray. This is not just benefitting others it feeds MY soul. It is an honor to bring someones earnest need to my Heavenly Father. I do plan to improve on this by writing down specific needs in my bible journal. - Candy S.

  • Whenever someone comes to mind I pray for them in the moment. I also started sending voice messages of prayer to people that send me a prayer request. I started doing this on the spot because for a long time I was uncomfortable praying out loud and for other people. I wanted to be better in prayer, and just like anything else knew I needed to practice and let the Holy Spirit do the rest if I didn’t know what to say. - Catherine F.

  • A few years ago, I was convicted about how many times I would with good intentions write "I will pray for you" on socials and wondered how many times I was actually praying for the needs I was reading about. I began the practice of praying on the spot. Instead of writing I will pray for you or speaking it, I would stop and pray, write it out. This practice has engaged my heart closer to Jesus and the community He made for us. - Sarah H.
